The little things we take for granted-What RAMADAN taught me.

Those who know me will back me up on this one. I am a foodie. Food is my soul. šŸ˜ But today, unlike most days of the year, I was observing a fast and I had this beautiful realization. And I would like to share it with all of you in the hope that it will motivate us to value the little things that we so easily take for granted.

Around noon, there were these awful hunger attacks and my stomach was making monstrous h(an)gry noises. Yes, I wanted food. I prayed to Allah to ease my task so that I could continue my fast until sunset. Those who aren’t aware what Ramadan is, here is a little help. Ramadan is one of the months of the Islamic Lunar Calendar. Muslims throughout the world fast from dawn to dusk as a sign of obedience to the almighty. It is also one of the five pillars of Islam.

All said, today’s fast made me realise the importance of food. In the college or at workplace, we take food more than we can consume. And then the leftovers go into the bin. Aren’t we all taking food for granted? Unlike most of us, there are a lot of people who can’t afford food, let alone good quality food. I realised, what it is like to be hungry ! What it is like to be poor ! I could feel fatigue in my cells towards the end of the day. Every single hunger pang made me count the numerous blessings I was bestowed upon with !

Today changed my perception about life, if not more. It has made me compassionate and more sensitive towards people and their needs. The little things we take for granted, are the biggest blessings !

I didn’t burn calories today. I burnt my pride and my ego.

      • Anja is a pet name from Anna. It stands for “favor” or “grace” or “beautiful”. Im grateful for such a beautiful name šŸ˜€ Ge stands for my surname, Grzelczak. As it is very difficult to pronounce, I always introduce it as Ge.
        Have a lovely day! šŸ˜€

  2. Your ramadhan piece is quite timely and nice post to read. Certainly, there is no blessed month we can compare to ramadhan except ramadhan itself. Thumb up!

  3. I love food! We fast once a month in my religion. It’s HARD. Giving up the flesh for the soul takes LOTS of willpower. Proud of you! Thank you for the information on Ramadan. I had no idea. I love learning new things.

  4. Such an honest and cruel realization, Tajwar. What we take for granted for most of our lives, is what many keep on struggling to have for their whole lives.
I, especially, liked the line-I didnā€™t burn calories today. I burnt my pride and my ego.

    Happy Ramadan! šŸ™‚
